Found this on the blog HG's World. And its a good read. I was wanting to link directly to the article that was quoted there on HG's blog, but that web page is no longer available.
Here are some highlights from the summary that was posted on HG's site.
The beginning of the Fourth American Republic. With the founding up to the Civil War as the first Republic. The Second Rebpulic from that point up to the New Deal/Great Society. And the Great Society era as the Third Repulic up to 2008-2009. Whatever the case, most Americans feel (and more important - think that a era is over with) that we are entering a new age of American history.
